Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (巌窟王) is an anime television series loosely based on Alexandre Dumas novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. The series was produced by Gonzo and directed by Mahiro Maeda. The series originally aired in Japan between October 5, 2004 and March 29, 2005, consisting of 24 episodes. The series was released in North America on DVD by Geneon Entertainment Inc. between October 25, 2005 and September 12, 2006.
