Akira (アキラ) is a Japanese anime cyberpunk action film directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and written by Izo Hashimoto and Otomo. The screenplay is based on Otomo's manga Akira. The film was released in Japan on July 16, 1988 and had a limited screening in North America on December 25, 1989. The film was released in North America on VHS by Streamline Pictures in 1990 and on DVD and VHS by Geneon Entertainment Inc. on July 24, 2001.
